Rising roots-rock artist Matt Koziol has a talent for telling stories inspired by his working-class upbringing in a poignant and relatable way, allowing listeners to hear their own experiences through his music. In his self-reflective new song, “I Was” (out today), Koziol recounts missteps of the past while appreciating the growth of his journey.

Co-written by Koziol and Kenton Bryant, who has also penned songs for Luke Combs, Kip Moore and others, “I Was” reflects on one’s past self and how it shapes us. From being at the top of a prayer list and the reason for a last call, to learning to slow and settle down, it’s a reminder that the past doesn’t define a person.

“Kenton Bryant and I wrote this song about taking time to be a better man than the years before,” says Koziol. “It takes a while to learn from mistakes, and we wanted to tell our own journeys in this one. I’m glad this song is yours now, and I hope y’all can hear your own story in it.”

“I Was” is the latest preview from Koziol’s forthcoming album ‘Last Of The Old Dogs,’ which is due April 5th. His previous track “Old Fashioned (feat. 49 Winchester)” was featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday Country playlist and Apple Music’s New Music DailyBest New Songs (Country)Country RisersNew In Country and New In Americana playlists.
